Competency Based Curriculum

Preparing the national trainers and working with the national trainers as they prepared the master trainers was very insightful. The immediacy of interaction allowed the opportunity to experience the transfer of skills into practice as well as the gaps and challenges the facilitators took up. In trainers preparation a follow through is critical to inform the process and ares that can be enhanced to make the preparation effective. The 5 day preparation and the following 5 day Participatory observation was very insightful in deepening the educator preparation process.

Workshop Brief: Managing Stress for Enhanced Teamwork in Education

SettingsStress, when left unchecked, can result in significant mental wellness issues, which act as a critical factor either facilitating or hindering teamwork within educational environments. Recognizing the demanding nature of educators’ roles, characterized by heavy workloads and diverse needs, it becomes imperative to address stress proactively. Unmanaged stress can escalate, adversely impacting mental wellness and subsequently impeding effective teamwork.

Recently, I had the opportunity to delve into these crucial concepts and devise strategies aimed at stress management. Through hands-on learning experiences, educators were empowered with comprehensive skills to tackle stress effectively.

Participant reflection was notably positive, with many realizing they had been grappling with mental wellness issues unknowingly. The role-play activities conducted during the session served as tangible evidence of the assimilation of these principles.

Observing Active Learning Strategies in Early Years Numeracy

Experiential learning plays a vital role in enhancing competencies. Observing an outdoor numeracy lesson provided valuable insights into educators’ innovative approaches to concept acquisition. Leveraging low-cost or no-cost resources can bridge the gap between learning and real-life experiences, providing affordability and practicality in education.

Master Facilitator Preparation

It’s crucial to establish a professional growth pathway for teachers who have participated in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and have demonstrated exemplary performance. Providing them with additional coaching and mentoring skills can enable them to evolve into Master Facilitators. This approach not only enhances their personal development but also amplifies the impact of our efforts by localizing leadership in respective areas of influence, thus ensuring a deeper understanding of the contextual dynamics. Moreover, as peers to their colleagues, they play a pivotal role in preparing others, fostering a sustainable model of growth.

This strategy is instrumental in expanding our reach and influence while nurturing homegrown talent capable of driving transformation at the grassroots level. Our success in implementing this model, particularly in the islands of Unguja and Zanzibar, underscores its effectiveness in fostering continuous improvement and scaffolding the transformative initiatives we are implementing on the ground.

Milestone

Today is a wonderful day to express gratitude. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Aga Khan Academies for providing me with the opportunity to learn while serving and to serve while learning. Celebrating a significant milestone of 22 years of service fills me with immense pride. I am committed to continuing to serve the community vigorously, contributing to the enhancement of education not only within our schools but also in public schools across East Africa.

DECONDING CBC

We recently hosted an enlightening webinar aimed at parents, focusing on unpacking the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). This session proved to be invaluable, offering participants a deeper understanding of the rationale behind CBC’s design, its structured breakdown over the years, and the significant demands it places on both parents and teachers. The virtual format allowed for an interactive exchange of ideas, with attendees actively engaging and responding to the content presented.

Blended Learning the Face to face Sector Gathering of 280 Educators at Kwale Cultural Center for Blended Learning Certification in Early Years Teaching

The vibrant halls of the Kwale Cultural Center welcomed 280 dedicated educators for an immersive five-day training session focused on enhancing early years numeracy and literacy instruction. This event marked a pivotal step in their journey towards a blended learning certificate in teaching and learning in early years education.

The gathering served as a platform for face-to-face interactions, enriching discussions, and practical demonstrations. Participants delved into a comprehensive module, combining traditional classroom engagement with the integration of distance learning elements.

Through interactive sessions, educators were guided on leveraging mobile devices to enhance communication, collaboration, and coursework submission. By seamlessly blending face-to-face instruction with digital tools, attendees gained invaluable insights into modern pedagogical approaches.

The Kwale Cultural Center provided an inspiring backdrop for this dynamic exchange of knowledge and ideas. As educators embraced the challenges and opportunities of blended learning, they left equipped with newfound skills and strategies to enrich their classrooms and nurture the next generation of learners.

Speaking out

When they gave me the Mike, I had this to say “Gamification transforms pedagogy by integrating game elements into educational practices. It engages learners through interactive, rewarding experiences, fostering motivation, collaboration, and skill development in a more dynamic learning environment. This enhances core competencies while creating opportunities to either catch or nurture values while connecting to pertinent and contemporary issues.”

Technical Support

Exciting update from this week’s activities! I had the fantastic opportunity to support a five-day face-to-face session of distance professional learning at the Aga Khan Schools, Academy Mombasa, offering technical support to MECP.

The participants were taken through a model of distance learning using MS TEAMS

Collaborating with Numeracy and Leadership coordinators, we co-delivered sessions in Kiswahili, focusing on Constructive Feedback and Error Correction for Teachers, Delegation for School Leaders, and showcasing and reflection for School Leaders. The participants were also introduced to platforms like Module and Teams, along with pedagogical tools such as Kahoot, Slido, Jamboard, and Quizizz. The sessions set the stage for a 6-week distance learning program, culminating in a reflective workshop and the launch of a three-month community of learning. Thrilled to have been part of this dynamic and multilingual learning experience!
